Is It Actually The Next Best Thing

so folks, it looks like summer reality/contest show time is upon us. On The Lot premiered last week and we have season 2 of America's Got Talent and American Inventor arriving shortly. and don't forget Last Comic Standing is coming back and the new show Age Of Love starting soon. then there is the show that premiered last night on abc, The Next Best Thing: Who Is The Greatest Celebrity Impersonator? yes, it is one of the longest frickin' titles ever, but it is also a good show... so far.

that's right, i quite enjoyed it last night. sure, the best part of all these contest shows is the thousands-of-people-audition part where you see the good and the really bad (those first few weeks of every American Idol season are the only ones i actually make an effort to watch).

however, with The Next Best Thing, i actually enjoyed seeing the good ones as much, if not more, then the bad ones. the best part of the bad ones were the funny quips made by the celebrity judges: lisa ann walter, jeffrey ross (who does funny stand-up) and elon gold (who is actually very funny also, especially if all you recognize him from is that awful pam anderson show Stacked).

last night were the l.a. auditions and there were some great ones, like that guy who did sam kinison, al pacino and one other one. he was great. the lucille ball chick was really good also and the robin willimas and george bush that they let through were alright but not great. personally i thought the martha stewart women was scary good, but they sent her home.

so, while this is based on just the first episode, and i may have to amend my grade as the show goes longer and i see how it develops past the auditions, i have to say that i enjoyed it. it was different, funny, i liked the judges and i am going to tune in next episode.

grade: B

I too was pleasantly surprised - even shocked at the talent I saw. Unbelievable. The Lucy, the Jack Nickolsen, the Honeymooners, BONO!, Little Richard - UNREAL, in every sense of the word. Even the Johnny Carson, an EXACT sound-alike, the Jerry Lewis, The Simon Cowell, and other sound-alikes were eerily voice clones of the real things. I can't wait to see the rest now...

The show sucked as bad as the wantabe so called judges. Never heard of them...at least I knew who the talent was suppose to portray. 'thumbs down'

Absolutely the next Worst thing! This was so bad, my Dog left the room! If these "Producers" want to be "serious" about "real talent", then have "real judges", Not "wannabees" nobody knows.
Afterall, if this were "truly" on the "up and up", they wouldn't have "3 comics' as the judges.
Think about it!

It really was awful! This is such poor television. If the rules are that they have to Look and Sound like their character, then why did they pick the impressionist guy, who sounded like George clooney etc. but didn't look like anybody in particular? I give it a -1. It SUCKED!

What a Dump!(who said that?) By the way America, did you know that they already chose the semi-finalists?and the finalists? It's R-i-g-g-e-d! It was done at the start. America Does NOT have a say. People in this country are being Snowed! If you have any smarts, don't watch this crapola! If you watch, then you are meerly sheep. Bah Bah.

When are we going to stop reality tv? Have the network execs lost their creativity, or are they just recruiting inexperienced kids and giving them the keys? Come on. America deserves better than that. How can anybody watch this nonsense? Are people of today so bored that they'll watch anything they throw at us? Get a grip America and Stop the madness.

I loved The Next Best Thing...although I would have liked to have seen judges that were "in the business" of "impersonating" like Rich Little...Joe Piscopo...familiar stars we know and respect. I can't wait to see the acts perform in the finals...then we can vote and we'll see how talented they are when they perform with a band and an audience.
